What is Ethics? (Part 2)

When does an act become ethical or unethical?

I am a Christian. And for that reason, I say that an act becomes ethical if it is right in the eyes of God. Otherwise, it is unethical.

"Rightness" in God’s eyes is revealed through the Bible. So in order for someone to know the right thing, one has to read (and study) the Bible regularly. And this has to be done with the guidance of the Holy Spirit through prayer. Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” So, the Bible is my manual for living life.

There are many examples of acts that have been mentioned in the Bible that are moral. The best of these is the story of Jesus. He came to earth, leaving his place in the right hand of God, in order to save us from our sins. His was a life of sacrifice for us. He was crushed and scorned and he bled to death. And he rose from the dead so that we might have life and that we might have it more abundantly (John 10:10).

Immoral acts would include the sins that we humans commit. These include violations of the laws given in the Old Testament among many others. A specific example of this is the story of Joseph the dreamer from the 37th chapter of the book Genesis. It was not Joseph who did an immoral act, but his brothers who conspired to kill him because they were jealous of him being their father Jacob’s favorite son. But they ended up only selling their brother to Midianite merchants for 20 pieces of silver so they can profit from his loss.
